A poll taken last week by Survey USA and the San Diego Union-Tribune found that 51% of respondents supported the recall of California Gov. Gavin Newsom, while 40% opposed it.

The results marked a turnaround from the two organizations' May poll, which registered 36% in favor of the recall and 47% opposed, the San Francisco Chronicle notes.

Other recent polls found voters roughly evenly split as the recall effort has gained momentum over the summer. A University of California, Berkeley-Los Angeles Times poll in July registered 47% support and 50% opposition.

Among would-be alternatives, the Survey USA/Union-Tribune poll taken Aug. 2-4 found Democratic YouTuber Kevin Paffrath leading at 27%, with Republican radio talk show host Larry Elder in second at 23%.

Farm groups have been silent on the Sept. 14 recall, which until recently was widely expected to be defeated. The California Republican Party declined Saturday, Aug. 7, to endorse any of the alternative candidates.
