A legacy is defined as a bequest or a gift. I learned it means much more than that.

My employer and friend, Scott Miller, founding attorney of Miller Legal Strategic Planning Centers in Tyler, Minn., taught me that a client’s legacy is the fulfillment of their hopes, dreams and aspirations. Sadly, Scott, age 52, passed away May 26 from cancer. He leaves behind his wife, Lisa, and two children.

Scott taught me that planning a legacy goes beyond the appointment of the appropriate people to make decisions, the distribution of the assets or the value of the estate.

A client’s legacy may include the guidance they provide a young farmer to promote the future generation’s growth and success; their caring for the comfort and needs of their spouse and children; the promotion of educational opportunities for children and grandchildren; the mentoring of a young employee to help them become successful; the promotion of a charitable cause; or establishing a natural quiet place for future generations to enjoy.

As you can see, there are many opportunities to leave a legacy.

Scott was a great mentor to me. He was loved by his family, friends, clients and colleagues. He leaves a legacy in the love of his family, the success of his business and the guidance he has provided family, clients, colleagues and friends.

Thank you, Scott, for all you have done for so many. You will be greatly missed.
