The Quarterly Hogs and Pigs report released on Friday found there were 70.9 million hogs and pigs on U.S. farms as of Sept. 1, up 2% from September 2015 and up 4% from June 1, 2016.

Other key findings in the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service report:
-Of the 70.9 million hogs and pigs, 64.8 million were market hogs, while 6.02 million were kept for breeding.
-Between June and August 2016, 32.0 million pigs were weaned on U.S. farms, up 2% from the same time period one year earlier.
-From June through August 2016, U.S. hog and pig producers weaned a record high average of 10.58 pigs per litter.

-U.S. hog producers intend to have 2.93 million sows farrow between September and November 2016, and 2.93 million sows farrow between December 2016 and February 2017.
-Iowa hog producers accounted for the largest inventory among the states, at 22.0 million head. North Carolina and Minnesota had the second and third largest inventories with 9.10 million and 8.20 million head, respectively.
To obtain an accurate measurement of the U.S. swine industry, NASS surveyed over 8,150 operators across the nation during the first half of September. Data were collected by electronic data reporting, mail, telephone and through face-to-face interviews. All surveyed producers were asked to report their hog and pig inventories as of September 1, 2016.
