Mike Pearson tells listeners how drought has hit the eastern third of the country and how bad the yields will be impacted just as harvest begins.
Drought is impacting areas all the way from Ohio to Virginia on the Atlantic Coast.
Corn, soybeans and wheat have all been hit hard.
The USDA has declared several counties in Ohio disaster areas as well as other states.
The damage is extensive. Farmers in Pickaway County Ohio say it's the worst they have ever seen in the area.
Corn yields are being hit hard. The USDA says the yields are around 40 bushels per acres when in better years, they are usually around 200 bushels per acre.
Soybeans are in terrible shape as well. The yield is usually between 55-60 bushels per acre and this year they are the mid 20's.
The USDA crop progress report shows the corn condition is rated as 7 percent poor and 18 percent very poor.
The soybeans are rated as being 9 percent poor and 19 percent very poor.
In Virginia , it's being called a catastrophe. The USDA report shows 60 percent of the crop in poor or very poor condition and massive yield loss.
In Pennsylvania, the crops are in similar condition.
The USDA report shows only 4 percent topsoil has adequate moisture in the pastures. And the pasture conditions are so poor, many farmers are feeding hay early which is causing high hay prices.
And some farmers are reporting such poor soybean conditions that they are baling double crop soybeans and feeding them as forage.
Farm Progress America is a daily look at key issues in agriculture. It is produced and presented by Mike Pearson, farm broadcaster and host of This Week in Agribusiness.
