Mike Pearson takes a look at the surprise announcement at who President Donald Trump wants to be the next U.S. Secretary of agriculture.

In 2017, during President Donald Trump's first term, the ag industry had to wait until right around the inauguration to find out who would be the secretary of agriculture.

This time, Trump didn't wait to announce his nominee.

Trump has announced he would like Brooke Rollins to run the department.

Currently, Rollins is the CEO and president of America First, a policy institute that is no profit.

Rollins was raised on a farm in Glenrose, Texas and has an agricultural degree from A&M University and a law degree from the University of Texas.

There has been mixed reactions when it comes to the announcement.

When Rollins takes the lead, she will be tasked with helping farmers deal with soaring input costs, low commodity prices and the need for a new farm bill.

In addition, she will have to find a way to balance the needs of large agriculture and family farms.

Farm Progress America is a daily look at key issues in agriculture. It is produced and presented by Mike Pearson, farm broadcaster and host of This Week in Agribusiness.
