Mike Pearson reminds listeners that Avian influenza may be dominating the news for being found in dairy herds recently, an outbreak in Iowa is a danger to poultry farmers.

Experts confirmed an HPAI outbreak in a commercial egg laying flock in Iowa. Over. 4.2 million birds were culled, the second largest culling since 2022.

This marks the first outbreak in Iowa in a poultry facility in 2024.

Producers are being reminded to tighten the biosecurity measures on their farm.

Iowa is not alone. Five commercial flocks in Minnesota have been culled so far this year.

The virus is still considered low risk for humans with 3 people confirmed with HPAI. However, it's deadly for birds.

Over 92 million birds have been culled in the USA since 2022.

This virus remains very deadly for birds and expensive for farmers.

An HPAI vaccine in the Netherlands is on trial and is being tested with results showing it's effective eight weeks after the vaccination. More results are due in 2025.

However, the idea of an HPAI vaccine in the USA is still questionable.

U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says the USA is still 18 months away from a vaccine if the virus doesn't mutate.
