Mike Pearson tells listeners about a change in the corn market coming to Mexico.

Last week, Mexico's new incoming government announced a change regarding the imports of yellow corn.

A change in the Mexican government has meant a new agriculture prime minister which means new policies.

Instead of focusing on yellow corn production, farmers will now focus on maintaining self sufficiency producing white corn.

The reason is because white corn is essential in producing tortilla's which is a staple in the Mexican diet.

Most of the yellow corn imported is genetically modified and used for livestock. Mexico imports about $6 billion worth of corn a year. The demand is expected to remain high due to the growing livestock sector.

However, the trade dispute between the USA and Mexico continues over the genetically modified corn grown in the USA.

USA contends that Mexico lacks science evidence to turn the corn away and it violates trade agreements.

A resolution to the dispute is expected at the end of the year.

Mexico is the top buyer of corn from the USA and the demand is expected to continue.

Farm Progress America is a daily look at key issues in agriculture. It is produced and presented by Mike Pearson, farm broadcaster and host of This Week in Agribusiness.
