If you got a drone from Christmas, there are two things you must know before taking your first flight, says Nolan Berg, precision  systems agronomist, Peterson Farms Seed, Hardwood, N.D.

1. You may only use your UAV for recreation or hobby and cannot use it commercially, unless you have a Section 333 exemption from the Federal Aviation Administration.

2. The FAA requires every UAV between 0.55 pounds. and 55 pounds. to be registered. There is a small registration fee of $5, but if you register by Jan. 20, your fee will be refunded. Upon registration, you will receive a registration number, which must be affixed to your drone, and a registration certificate, which you must carry with you whenever you fly your UAV. Failure to register could result in up to $27,500 in fines from the FAA. Click here to register your UAV.
