Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Australia’s Department of Agriculture and Water Resources have entered into a cooperative research initiative to promote food, water security and international development.

Dr. Patrick Stover, AgriLife Research director, and Australian Ambassador to the U.S. Joe Hockey, signed the agreement at the Texas A&M AgriLife Center on the Texas A&M University campus in College Station Jan. 23.

“We are extremely pleased to have joined together to promote collaborative projects and an exchange of scientists involving two critical components we rely on each day — food and water,” Stover said. “Through this collaboration, we will be exchanging faculty and research scholars emphasizing collaborative programs that will unveil solutions to incredibly complex environmental questions that exist here in Texas and the nation as well as the southern and eastern hemispheres.”

“As the field of agriculture continues to grow and adapt in the 21st century, it is critical we support research institutions and work together to find ways that continue safe and abundant global agricultural production,” Hockey said. “This significant partnership between Australia and Texas A&M University will continue to make our common goals of strengthening education and research development programs possible to benefit people across the globe.”

The agreement will promote mutual cooperation in the areas of agricultural teaching, research and extension. The activities will promote food, water security and international development and strengthen education and research in agriculture, food, water and life sciences.

Joint research and meetings related to education and outreach, along with developing publications and other information for educational outreach, will be among the proposed collaborative activities.

“One of our core initiatives within Texas A&M AgriLife is to strengthen our international involvement,” Stover said. “Through this partnership, we are doing just that by not only promoting collaborative research but creating opportunities for our students.”
