More than 70 years after Allis-Chalmers introduced the roto-baler, companies are still churning out innovative products. The Allis-Chalmers engineers had the right idea; they just didn’t think big enough. It took Gary Vermeer and others to come up with a machine that truly revolutionized haymaking by cutting labor needs — the large round baler.

Companies are still introducing new big-bale balers. Massey Ferguson displayed the MF 4160P baler at recent farm shows. It also produces big round bales. Other companies unveiled systems which wrap big bales, including Kuhn, who now offers the OptiWrap OWR 6000. Lankota even came up with an innovative way to take more of the backbreaking labor out of haymaking. The company introduced a winch system to help lift rolls of net wrap into the bale chamber. Some of those rolls weigh well over 100 pounds.

If you still prefer small bales or have a market for them, several companies can help you mechanize that task as well. Adding to products on the market, Arcusin offers a bale stacker-loader, and the Marcrest Bale Baron 5250P turns individual small bales into stacks of bales.

All of the innovation isn’t in the back end of the haymaking process, however. New Holland, Case and John Deere all introduced new windrowers to the market, and Kubota offers a recently introduced disk mower.
