Webinar details
From Penn State University Dairy Alliance
Tuesday, November 9 -- Improving Existing Dairy Stalls
8:30 to 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time
Cows seem to have taught us what they like (and don’t like) about dairy stall design and management over the past several decades. Successful freestall and tie stall designs become the model for how the structure and dimensions of older ones can be modified to suit the needs of productive dairy cows. Dan F. McFarland, Penn State Extension engineer, will provide current recommendations and strategies to improve existing stalls. Thursday, November 11 -- Managing Somatic Cell Counts (SCC)
1:00 p.m. Eastern Time
Three dairy experts will provide a brief overview of SCC, methods for identifying trouble areas and problems cows, ways to reduce SCC and changes in acceptable bulk tank SCC. Ron Erskine, Michigan State University, will provide an introduction explaining the origin of somatic cells and the importance of a cow’s immunity. Jeff Reneau, University of Minnesota, will explain how to use records for high SCC and mastitis problem solving. He will show how to use records to identify herd mastitis and SCC trends, and to identify individual problem cows to improve their udder health and milk quality. Larry Fox, Washington State University, will outline keys to preventing and controlling mastitis and practices to lower and maintain lowered SCC. This webinar is approved for one continuing education credit from the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists (ARPAS).

Friday, November 19 -- Update on EPA Regulation of Livestock Operations
2:30 p.m. Eastern Time
Learn more about federal requirements under the Oil Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) Program to prevent oil spills into waters of the United States and adjoining shorelines. Livestock and other operations are covered if they store, transfer, use or consume oil or oil products, such as diesel fuel, gasoline, lube oil, hydraulic oil, adjuvant oil, crop oil, vegetable oil or animal fat and store more than 1,320 U.S. gallons in aboveground containers or more than 42,000 U.S. gallons in completely buried containers; and could reasonably be expected to discharge oil to waters of the US or adjoining shorelines, such as interstate waters, intrastate lakes, rivers and streams. J. Troy Swackhammer of EPA's Office of Emergency Management will explain the recent extension of the compliance deadline and the status of a proposed rule to exempt certain milk containers.
