Customized fuel carts are your mobile filling and work station.

Fuel trailers have become more and more common on farms over the last decade, so, what's driving this trend?

There are many factors contributing to the fairly recent popularity of fuel trailers, but perhaps one of the most common reasons is that farms are continuing to grow. As farms grow, farm machinery moves further and further away from stationary fuel sources. It's also quite common to farm multiple farm sites that may be miles from each other. Fuel trailers provide a mobile solution to keep a variety of farm equipment running which saves time and improves efficiency.

Increases in both the function and the convenience that fuel trailers provide have also contributed to higher demand. Almost as important as having fuel when and where you need it, having easy access to DEF is a huge benefit. Modern diesel equipment is engineered to meet or exceed Tier 4 final emissions standards, most commonly through the use of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology. This SCR technology requires DEF to operate correctly. Without DEF, your expensive farm equipment can either run at a greatly reduced capacity or stop completely until you are able to re-fill the DEF tank. Many of today's fuel trailers give farmers the option to include a DEF tank, making the fuel cart a full service fuel option.

For many producers that own a fuel trailer, it's more than a way to just top off the tractor or combine. It's a mobile work station. Customized with a toolbox, air compressor, welding station, and even a generator, these fuel carts mean business. Farmers can stock the trailer with everything they need for the day and more to ensure that they are prepared for just about anything that the day can throw at them.

With all these reasons to have a fuel trailer, it's no wonder that they've become commonplace on many farms. So, for those looking to get a fuel trailer, here are a few things to consider when investing in one.

How much do you need? Fuel trailers are available in various capacities, often up to just under 1,000 gallons. Consider your fleet and how much fuel you need in a typical day.

Was the fuel trailer made for the farm? Not all fuel trailers are created equal. Some are made to be pulled on smooth roads and are not meant for the bumpy rides of gravel roads and fields. Be sure your fuel trailer was manufactured for off road use.

Finally, what add-ons would help you get the most out of your fuel trailer? As mentioned earlier in the article, fuel carts can often be outfitted with a variety of add-ons. Consider how and when you will use your fuel trailer and order accordingly. Some options can be added on at any time while others may need to be factory installed.

With farms continuing to grow and producers farming more and more acres, it may be time to consider a fuel trailer that's purpose built for the farm.
