Three new planters are among the new planting and seeding equipment that companies displayed to farmers at recent live farm shows. It was the first time in two years that many farmers could kick the tires and feel the disk blades in person.

Horsch displayed its SV and SP planters for farmers to evaluate up close and in person at the shows. Agco also displayed the Fendt Momentum planter on its show lot. Some of these models were already at work in Midwest fields this spring, while many other people had yet to get a good look at why these companies believe they have winners in these new products.

Short-line companies are devoting lots of time, money and engineering energy into coming up with better-closing wheel systems for existing planters. Schaffert and Graham worked together on a version of Schaffert’s four-link closing wheel system to add electric actuators for control of down pressure on closing wheel units. Each company displayed a slightly different take on how to equip these units with various ways of also applying starter fertilizer at the same time.

Prescription Tillage hit it big with its serrated-edge disk opener blades, now finding a home on hundreds of planters of various colors across the Corn Belt. The company is back with a bearing which should last longer, and a tweak on the cutting edge of the blades which should allow the blades to perform better longer.
