If you maintain 25 to 30 acres with a rotary mower each year, here is a new series of rotary mowers that deserves a look before you decide which rotary mower to buy. Bad Boy rotary cutters feature economy while still being plenty tough enough to get the job done.

Spokespersons say the new rotary cutter models from Bad Boy are mid-duty models and are in the middle price range of rotary cutters on the market. However, they insist they’re top-notch and second to none when it comes to being built with quality from start to finish.

Choose from 4-foot, 5-foot, 6-foot or 7-foot models. Decks are made from10-gauge steel, with part of the deck on the 7-foot-wide model being made of 7-gauge steel. The two narrower models feature blades which are a half-inch thick and 3 inches wide. The 6-foot and 7-foot models use blades that are a half-inch thick and 3½ inches wide. Total weight varies from 600 pounds for the 4-foot model to 1,187 pounds for the 7-foot cutter.

Operate the 4-foot cutter with a tractor with 24 to 40 horsepower. The 60-inch-cut model still works with a tractor delivering 24 hp, and you can pull it with a 55-hp tractor if you want. Minimum recommended hp for the two bigger models is 35, with the top end of the range recommended at 72 and 83, respectively.

• Tom’s takes. The same people who make Bad Boy zero-turn, commercial-grade mowers make these cutters. You can’t have a name like Bad Boy and the picture of an angry junkyard dog in your logo if you don’t turn out quality products!

The number of models in 1-foot width increments is a plus. It lets you pair up your tractor width and horsepower with the cutter that suits you best. Give it a look.

• Lon’s observations. I took note of the fact that the new Bad Boy rotary mower is designed to shed water and grass clippings off the deck easily. That’s the main complaint that I have with my current rotary mower. If you have a Bad Boy dealer near you, it would be worth checking out the company’s new product.

• Mindy’s views. If you are like me and your pastures are lined with trees, the rear skid plates on these Bad Boy rotary mowers will catch your attention. I tend to try and mow every inch, including right next to those trees. However, my maneuvering skills may be lacking. The skid plates offer that extra piece of protection — something my husband can appreciate.
