DELHI, La. — Louisiana corn and cotton producers will learn the latest in research designed to help them grow profitable crops during the 2006 Louisiana Corn and Cotton Forums slated for Feb. 7 at the Delhi Civic Center in Delhi, La.

LSU AgCenter agent Keith Collins of Richland Parish said a variety of topics will be addressed during the forums, which begin with registration at 8:30 a.m.

“We have several different experts scheduled to speak on topics ranging from variety recommendations to fertility recommendations and so on,” Collins said.

The forums will feature LSU AgCenter experts who will be talking about variety recommendations, planting dates, weed-control strategies, insects and pest control, fertility recommendations and the influence of no-till on soil compaction. Farm finances also will be discussed, as will the 2006 market outlook and such topics as worker protection standards.

The corn forum also has been approved as a private applicator recertification meeting, but the cotton forum has not received that approval, Collins said.

The corn forum will run throughout the morning and is expected to end at 12:10 p.m. It will be followed by a sponsored lunch. The cotton forum in Delhi will get under way at 1:30 p.m.

Bob Hutchinson, the LSU AgCenter regional director for northeast Louisiana, said this year the cotton forum in Delhi is taking the place of the one previously held annually in Monroe. But he said that may not be a permanent move.

“We will probably make a decision soon after this year’s event concerning the future of the cotton forum,” Hutchinson said.
