Eleven Michigan State University students pursuing livestock industry-related programs of study for the 2020-21 academic year recently were awarded $33,000 in scholarships by the Michigan Livestock Industry Scholarship Foundation.

“Simply getting good grades is not enough to be recognized with one of these scholarships," says Pete Blauwiekel, foundation president.

In addition to academic achievement, the scholarship’s criteria includes extracurricular leadership and involvement, written and oral communication skills, and enthusiasm in pursuing a livestock (beef cattle, sheep, swine, meat products or equine) industry career.

“Those individuals selected for this honor have a clear passion and demonstrated involvement in the Michigan animal industry and a commitment to its future improvement,” Blauwiekel says.

This year’s recipients and the recognition awarded include: Torey Fischer, Battle Creek — Michigan Horse Council; Caitlin Henne, Eaton Rapids — David Morris; Amanda Kosal, Deckerville — David Arnold; Lily Atkinson, Spring Lake — Arabian Horse Association; Sadie Finegan, Jonesville — Gerald Haarer; Rebecca Herzon, Paris — Harlan Ritchie; Micayla Phillips, Sterling Heights — Harold Lein; Katie Butler, Gaylord — David Arnold; Joseph Marsh, Montague — Michigan Cattlemen’s Association; McKenna Broughton, Attica, N.Y., Michigan Polled Hereford Association; and Jenna Grabowski, Crystal Falls – Dick and Glenda Braman.

Since awarding its first scholarships more than 50 years ago, the Michigan Livestock Industry Scholarship Foundation has played an influential role in advancing the education of talented and dedicated students.

MLISF was organized for the purpose of collecting and administering funds contributed by any person, business or organization wishing to honor people in the livestock and allied industries, living or deceased, who have performed distinguished services for the livestock industry of Michigan; and to provide scholarships for worthy young people pursuing training in the field of animal science.
