Eleven outstanding Michigan State University students pursuing livestock industry-related programs of study for the 2019-20 academic year were recently awarded $33,000 in scholarships by the Michigan Livestock Industry Scholarship Foundation (MLISF).

Foundation President Pete Blauwiekel says “simply getting good grades is not enough to be recognized with one of these scholarships.”

In addition to academic achievement, the scholarship’s criteria include extracurricular leadership and involvement, written and oral communication skills, and enthusiasm in pursuing a livestock (beef cattle, sheep, swine, meat products or equine) industry career.

“Those individuals selected for this honor have a clear passion and demonstrated involvement in the animal industry and a commitment to its future improvement in Michigan,” Blauwiekel says.

This year’s recipients are:

  • Kaylee Montney, Kingsley, David Morris award

  • Madeline Meyer, Ionia, Gerald Haarer award

  • Rebecca Herzog, Paris, Michigan Cattlemen’s Association award

  • Torey Fischer, Battle Creek, Arabian Horse Association award

  • Rachel Postello, Lawrence, Michigan Horse Council award

  • Callie Halsey, Adrian, Dennis & Donna Banks award

  • Brady Littlefield, Burr Oak, Michigan Polled Hereford Association award

  • Emily Malcolm, Paw Paw, Jack & Patti Knirk award

  • Emma Roussey, Sturgis, David Arnold award

  • Abigail van der Swaagh, North Grosvenordale, Conn., Harold Lein award

  • Jenna Grabowski, Crystal Falls, David & Jackie Topel award

Since awarding the first scholarships 50 years ago, MLISF has played an influential role in advancing the education of talented and dedicated students, Blauwiekel said. MLISF was organized for the purpose of collecting and administering funds contributed by any person, business or organization wishing to honor people in the livestock and allied industries — living or deceased — who have performed distinguished services for the livestock industry of Michigan; and to provide scholarships for young people pursuing training in the field of animal science.
