Editor’s note. It is our good fortune to be sharing a summer intern with Iowa State University Extension this summer. Callie Greiner will work with Wallaces Farmer and the Farm Progress Show staff, writing for the magazine, website and social media. Please don’t hesitate to let Callie know if you have an idea for an article. Below she shares her own story.

By Callie Greiner

Growing up in a small farming community near Keota in southeast Iowa, I developed a passion for agriculture. I’ve been fortunate to be exposed to many different aspects of the agriculture industry throughout my life. As a youth, I participated in both 4-H and FFA activities, exhibited animals at fairs, and participated in district and state leadership competitions.

I’m in my senior year at Iowa State University, working toward a bachelor’s degree in agriculture and society, with a minor in communications. During the school year, I stay involved with my sorority, Delta Zeta, as well as other clubs and organizations on campus. These activities have helped me grow my skill set. This knowledge will be useful as I move forward with my internship this summer and future career after graduation in May 2019.

This summer I’ll be working primarily with Madeline Schultz, program manager of the ISU Women in Agriculture program, and with Steve Johnson, Extension farm management specialist. I am eager to work with and learn from them and other ag professionals.

I believe this internship will be one of the most liberating experiences of my life. I hope to not only gain an exceptional amount of knowledge and new skills, but also grow as a young professional in agriculture.

I’ll also be writing articles featured in the June, July and August issues of Wallaces Farmer magazine. You can follow my work online at the Wallaces Farmer website. During August, I’ll be working full-time with the Farm Progress Show staff writing articles about the upcoming show for social media and keeping the show’s web page updated. My summer intern experience at the show site near Boone will also include handling media inquiries and interviews, assisting exhibitors as they prepare for the show, and being present to help during the show on Aug. 28-30.

Greiner is an ISU Extension and Outreach ag communications summer intern.
