A plaque hanging in the hallway of the Purdue University Ag Administration building in West Lafayette, Ind., honors Tom Budd, former editor of Indiana Prairie Farmer, and students who have earned the scholarship named in his honor. Now, Mina Reising’s name will be added to that list.

Reising, New Harmony, Ind., was selected as the most recent recipient of this award. It’s presented each year to a freshman in the Purdue ag communication program.

“I really enjoy writing and speaking, and I want to learn as much about ag journalism as I can,” Reising says. Her future career plans include either writing for an agricultural publication or working in an ag-related business.

Reising, who attended Evansville Reitz High School, didn’t grow up on a farm, but has been exposed to agriculture in various forms throughout her life. Her dad, a Purdue graduate in ag systems management, works in the food industry today.

The award itself is named after the late Tom Budd, who grew up on a beef cattle and crop farm near Lebanon, Ind., and first joined Prairie Farmer as a science writer. He was the first editor of Indiana Prairie Farmer once it became a separate publication, and became vice president in charge of editorial for Farm Progress Cos. in 1982. He was also director of the Farm Progress Show for several years, and expanded its coverage in Indiana, taking it to Knightstown, Rochester, Columbus and Terre Haute during his tenure. After retiring in the mid-’90s, Budd returned to the family farm.

Budd was always passionate about journalists and about serving agriculture, especially Indiana farmers. Farm Progress sponsors the award.
