Dow Tests New Bt Corn Hybrid

Dow AgroSciences announced research results of a new Bt corn hybrid that in early tests exhibits control of pests in addition to European corn borer (ECB).

The hybrids being tested contain the cry1F protein, according to Jonathan Babcock, Dow senior research biologist. The early results show "broader spectrum in-plant insect protection."

Babcock, speaking during the ASA and NCGA Commodity Classic, says the hybrids with the cry1F protein have performed very well against many pests in initial testing phases. In addition to ECB, the hybrids have shown protection against southwest corn borer, black cutworm and fall armyworm.

New hybrids containing the cry1F protein are not expected to be available on the market until 2002.
