Seven students who are interested in pursuing careers in dairy production recently began on-farm internships sponsored by the Center for Dairy Excellence Foundation of Pennsylvania, in partnership with the Professional Dairy Managers of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Dairyman’s Association.

The program was created to provide a hands-on, farm-based learning experience to the next generation of dairy managers.

“The program gives future, young dairy producers and leaders a chance to learn from some of the best progressive dairies in the state and country,” says Brittany Haag, dairy education program manager at the Center for Dairy Excellence. “The interns learn why decisions are made on the farm, what factors to think about and how to successfully maintain a farm budget.”

For eight to 12 weeks throughout the summer, interns will gain on-farm experience and participate in discussion boards and monthly calls with mentors and program supervisors. These experiences are designed to expose students to all aspects of a successful, progressive dairy operation.

Students will also conduct a research project that benefits their dairy farm. After researching and analyzing various topics, they will present their findings in August at the end of their internship.

The following students will be participating in the internship program this summer:

• Shara Allman. El-Vi Farms Inc. in Newark, N.Y., and Willow Bend Farm LLC in Shortsville, N.Y.

• Caitlyn Degner. Walmoore Holsteins Inc. in West Grove, Pa.

• George Demers. Masons Chrome View in Nottingham, Pa.

• Aaron Harbach. Barrington Dairy LLC in Montezuma, Ga.

• Catherine Moyer. Little Crick Farm in Stevensville, Pa.

• Holly Musser. Restful Acres in Hershey, Pa.

• Montana Stump. Hetrickdale Farm in Bernville, Pa.

The Center for Dairy Excellence Foundation, the Professional Dairy Managers of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Dairymen’s Association provided $3,000 in grants to support the interns during the summer. Students must attend a Pennsylvania university, be a Pennsylvania resident attending an out-of-state school, or be a recently graduated Pennsylvania resident with an interest in dairy production.
