May milk production up 4% from year earlier

ON THE RISE: Dairy herds in Michigan produced 993 million pounds of milk during May.

Dairy herds in Michigan produced 993 million pounds of milk during May, up 4% from a year ago, according to Marlo Johnson, regional director of the USDA National Agricultural Statistic Service’s Great Lakes office.

The daily rate per cow was 75 pounds, up 1.3 pounds from May 2016. The dairy herd was estimated at 427,000 head for May, up 9,000 head from a year earlier.

Milk production in the 23 major dairy states during May totaled 17.8 billion pounds, up 1.8%  from May 2016. The daily production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 65.6 pounds for May, 0.5 pound above May 2016.

The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.72 million head, 81,000 head more than May 2016 and 2,000 head more than April 2017.
