Dairy herds in Michigan produced 971 million pounds of milk during March, up 0.8% from a year ago, according to Marlo Johnson, regional director of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, Great Lakes Regional Office. The daily rate per cow was 73.5 pounds, up 0.4 pounds from March 2017. The dairy herd was estimated at 426,000 head for March, up 1,000 head from a year earlier.
Milk production in the 23 major states during March totaled 17.8 billion pounds, up 1.5% from March 2017. The daily production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 65.7 pounds for March, 0.7 pounds above March 2017. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.74 million head, 29,000 head more than March 2017, but 2,000 head less than February 2018.
