TPPA Conference Dec. 6 and 7, Bryan, TexasAg technology is theme for TPPA conference

<p>A popular and informative part of the annual TPPA conference is the poster session.</p>

Texas farmers, crop consultants and other ag industry representatives will learn how to take advantage of the latest technology during the 28th annual Texas Plant Protection Associations’ conference, Dec. 6 and 7 at the Brazos, Center in Bryan, Texas.

Bob Avant, program director at Texas A&M AgriLife Research, leads off the opening general session with an Advanced technology overview. Ron Smith, Editor of Southwest Farm Press, and Kara Matheny, Texas AgriLife Extension, will explore “Apps for Agriculture,” looking at innovative ways farmers can stay connected wherever they are.

Alex Thomasson, Texas A&M, will cover the latest information on unmanned aerial vehicles—UAVs—and the application to agriculture.  Bob Coulson and Todd Sink follow with a discussion on the Texas Crop Registry and a new “Flag the Technology App,” that will promote product stewardship.

Opening General Session will conclude with an update from Candler Goule, CEO, National

Wheat Growers on insights from Washington, especially on regulations and ag reform.

FULL AGENDA

Other speakers will discuss specific crop production and research topics including: new and minor crops, fertility management, grain production, cotton, pasture and rangeland/vegetation management, turf and horticulture, new technology and chemistry, and laws and regulations.

A general session is also scheduled for consultants.

Ron Smith has spent more than 40 years covering Sunbelt agriculture. Ron began his career in agricultural journalism as an Experiment Station and Extension editor at Clemson University, where he earned a Masters Degree in English in 1975. He served as associate editor for Southeast Farm Press from 1978 through 1989. In 1990, Smith helped launch Southern Turf Management Magazine and served as editor. He also helped launch two other regional Turf and Landscape publications and launched and edited Florida Grove and Vegetable Management for the Farm Press Group. Within two years of launch, the turf magazines were well-respected, award-winning publications. Ron has received numerous awards for writing and photography in both agriculture and landscape journalism. He is past president of The Turf and Ornamental Communicators Association and was chosen as the first media representative to the University of Georgia College of Agriculture Advisory Board. He was named Communicator of the Year for the Metropolitan Atlanta Agricultural Communicators Association. More recently, he was awarded the Norman Borlaug Lifetime Achievement Award by the Texas Plant Protection Association. Smith also worked in public relations, specializing in media relations for agricultural companies. Ron lives with his wife Pat in Johnson City, Tenn. They have two grown children, Stacey and Nick, and three grandsons, Aaron, Hunter and Walker.
