This season saw more than 88 million soybean acres planted in the U.S. As more farmers move acres to soybeans, it’s important that they carefully weigh their options when it comes to seed selections to ensure maximum return on investment. Here are three considerations to help make the best soybean seed decisions for 2023:
1. Consider Trait Technology
One of the most important decisions a farmer makes when it comes to soybean seed selection is what trait technology is best suited to their operation.
While there are many options to consider, greater than 45% of acres have now switched to the Enlist® weed control system with Enlist E3® soybeans. Enlist® herbicides feature near-zero volatility and reduced potential for physical drift when applied according to label instructions, as well as a wide application window, no calendar cutoff dates or time-of-day restrictions.
Additionally, earlier this year, the EPA granted amended registrations for Enlist One® and Enlist Duo® herbicides for seven years through Jan. 11, 2029, giving farmers certainty in system availability for the foreseeable future.
2. Don’t Discount Genetics
Soybean varieties shouldn’t deliver yield performance only in ideal conditions. Farmers need to stabilize performance when unpredictable challenges occur each season, and that requires effective genetic and agronomic options.
Elite genetics, in addition to delivering the highest possible yield potential, allow breeders to develop varieties with better agronomic performance in key areas like emergence and standability, as well as defensive traits to help protect yield from soybean diseases such as white mold and sudden death syndrome.
Access to elite genetics also allows for more varieties across more maturities, so farmers can choose the right varieties to fit the unique needs of their acres.

3. It’s All About Yield
Current soybean commodity prices mean any extra bushels can provide a significant boost to profitability.
This season, farmers got their first opportunity to plant new Pioneer® brand A-Series Enlist E3® soybeans. These highly anticipated varieties, exclusive to Pioneer, combine Enlist® trait technology with the world-class genetics of Pioneer brand A-Series soybeans.
The genetics in A-Series soybeans are the highest-yielding Pioneer has ever introduced. In 2021, A-Series soybeans delivered a 3 bushels-per-acre yield advantage against all competitors.1 Larger-scale availability is expected across even more maturities to meet farmer demand for 2023 planting.
With these three considerations in mind, talk to your local field agronomist or sales representative to select the right soybean varieties for your acres.
