FLOWER POWER: For the past dozen years, Alan Koelling and his family have been raising sunflowers on their family farm south of Ord, Neb. Koelling originally developed a business plan to produce biodiesel from his homegrown sunflowers. While the biodiesel concept did not turn out to be viable, the family’s research led them to begin processing their sunflowers into cooking oil. That’s the story of how Simply Sunflower cooking oil was born, now available in more than 350 stores across the country. The sunflower cooking oil is known for its healthful traits, including being high in vitamin E, antioxidants and beneficial fats. Today, Koelling and his family not only raise and process their own cooking oil, but they also package it in a plant in North Loup.
