Southeast farmers can learn tips to maximize profitability on cotton and peanut crops at meetings planned by the Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service this month.

The annual South Carolina Cotton Growers Meeting will be 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 24 at the Santee Conference Center, 1737 Bass Drive, Santee. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. The annual South Carolina Peanut Growers Meeting will follow on Jan. 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the same location. Registration is not required for either event, and lunch will be provided at both.

Clemson University scientists will share the latest research results on insect and weed management, precision agriculture, cotton breeding, variety trials and more. Extension economist Nathan Smith will provide market outlooks at both events.

The cotton meeting sponsored by Extension and the South Carolina Cotton Board also includes presentations and remarks from the state cotton board, the National Cotton Council, the S.C. Department of Agriculture, Bayer CropScience, Americot, Monsanto, Dow AgroSciences and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The peanut meeting also includes presentations on the Farm Bill and federal policy and remarks from the South Carolina Peanut Board, the Peanut Growers Cooperative Marketing Association, the S.C. Department of Agriculture, Virginia Tech University, North Carolina State University, the National Peanut Board, The Redding Firm of Washington, D.C., and The Spearman Agency of Tifton, Georgia.

Copies of Clemson’s Peanut Money-Maker Production Guide will be available at the peanut meeting as well. Event attendees also will be eligible to receive pesticide applicators recertification credits and certified crop advisor credits.
