Pulse USA has released five new varieties for 2020 — two yellow field peas, two forage peas and one winter pea variety.

“All of these lines are great additions to our pulse and cover crop programs and we’re pretty excited about each of them,” says Emily Paul, Pulse USA sales and product development director.

DL Apollo, a yellow field pea, was selected for its high yield potential and maturity fit for the Northern Plains. It has proven to be adaptable to the Dakotas, Nebraska and Minnesota.

The second yellow field pea has not yet been named yet. It has exceptionally high protein plus high yield. “We are especially excited about this variety for the pea protein markets available to farmers,” Paul says.

Fergie is a yellow-seeded, black-eyed, full-leaf type forage pea that is being advanced for cover crop and forage use. It has an early-medium maturity that makes it suited for pairing with an early maturing forage grass variety such as spring oats, barley or triticale.

Max is a green-seeded, full-leaf type forage pea that is being advanced for premium forage and wildlife purposes. It tests out exceptionally well for feed qualities and values, which makes it a great inclusion in high quality forages, Paul says.

Icicle is a winter pea variety that is also green seeded with an extremely small seed size. “We selected this line due to its improved winter hardiness over traditional lines,” she says. “It has an extremely small seed size, approximately 4500 seeds per pound, which makes it very economical to plant per acre since it will require less bulk weight.”
