While farmers continue to report progress planting 2017 crops, growers posting Feedback From The Field so far this week they aren’t out of the woods yet.

Heavy weekend rains and cold temperatures are keeping some folks spinning wheels.

While a producer from central Nebraska said some in his area are finishing, he’s still trying to get corn completed before turning to soybeans.

“Very wet as we had around six inches here last Wednesday to Sunday,” the farmer posted. “No sun those days and temps in the 40-50 range three of those days.”

To the east in central Iowa, another producer was done planting corn but only 5% of those fields had emerged, with no soybeans planted yet.

Just over the border to the north in Minnesota, a grower in Faribault County said they were too wet, “but it is much worse west of here.”

“Cold temps are not helping, as well as weed pressure taking off and too wet to get out and spray, with most corn up and most bean fields cracking, meaning we cannot use our best chemical practices and must fall back to backup game plans.”

USDA is scheduled to release its first nationwide condition ratings for corn after Memorial Day. Growers rating fields on Feedback are just average for corn and slightly below average for soybeans. Excellent ratings were hard to find early this week. Still, some growers are having trouble rating conditions since crops haven’t emerged yet.
