Growers hoping for an end to the cold, wet spring got more than they bargained for last week. Conditions turned hot and dry, with 60% of the Corn Belt getting less than a quarter inch of rain and temperatures took off into the 90s. Some fields are suffering, from one end of the Midwest to the other.
“Poor soybean emergence but probably enough of a stand to make a crop,” noted a grower from northwest Indiana. “Problem is dry and hot has set in. Cold and wet spring has turned into hot and dry summer. Never a good scenario.”
“Getting dry,” agreed a producer from south central Iowa.”. Corn rolling and small beans not growing much.”
Farmers responding to Feedback last week said corn planting is pretty much done, with soybean seeding advancing to 92%. But growers also have field to replant, which is limited their assessment of crops. Ratings for corn and soybeans both edged a little higher, but remain only slightly above average early in the growing season. Just a quarter of respondents rated corn in good to excellent condition, less than half the condition found last week nationwide by USDA.
“Sure, there is some good,” wrote a Nebraska producer on Thursday. “But the poor far outweighs it. Heat, frost, snow and more heat this weekend!”
