DONATING: This season Blake Farms expects 50,000 pounds of apples to be picked and donated to needy organizations in metro Detroit.

As part of its longstanding partnership with food rescue organization Forgotten Harvest, Blake Farms in Armada will donate $1 per every bushel picked by guests. The apples will be donated to Forgotten Harvest the entire month of September in support of Hunger Action Month.
"We look forward to our community coming together to help those who are less fortunate — to come out here, bring the family, buy apples, and we'll donate $1 for every bushel. It’s that easy," says Paul Blake, co-owner of Blake Farms.

Four years ago, the Blake family started the Forgotten Harvest Orchard of Hope program by donating 2 acres of land at its Big Apple Orchard to Forgotten Harvest. Five hundred apple trees were planted and are harvested each fall. This season, Blake Farms expects 50,000 pounds of apples to be picked. These fresh, nutritious apples are then distributed free-of-charge to over 250 agency partners in metro Detroit.

"The Orchard of Hope is a reminder for us that there are less fortunate people out there that don’t have the same access to healthy foods like we do,” says Blake Farms co-owner Pete Blake. “It’s humbling for us to be able to share something we are so passionate about while helping our community."

Forgotten Harvest CEO Kirk Mayes says, “Community partners like the Blake family are vital to the sustainability of our mission. We are so gratified to know that the 1 in 4 metro Detroit kids who face hunger will be able to celebrate the fall with fresh healthy apples.”

Apples can be picked at two Blake Farms locations, including:
• Blake’s Big Apple (Forgotten Harvest’s Orchard of Hope is also located here), 71485 North Ave., Armada.
• Blake’s Orchard & Cider Mill, 17985 Armada Center Rd., Armada

Last year, Forgotten Harvest rescued 45.3 million pounds of food, an increase of 8% from the previous period. Over 16,000 Forgotten Harvest volunteers spent a total of 70,731 hours packaging food and supporting distribution to over 250 agency partners in the region.
