The latest crop progress report shows corn and soybean planting and emergence is either right on target or ahead of the four-year average. After the winter that would not end in the Midwest, many thought planting could be pushed back. However, that does not appear to be the case, now that the upper Midwest practically doubled their planted acres last week.

Corn

The latest crop progress report shows 81% of the corn planted in the United States. The four year average at this point is 81%. The nation was at 82% in 2017.

Illinois and Missouri are leading the nation with 96% of the corn in the ground. Meanwhile, Indiana producers report 88% planted (up from 73% last week) and 86% in Iowa (65% last week). Minnesota farmers planted a lot last week, going from 40% to the current 77% complete. Likewise in South Dakota who went from 21% to 66% planted in a week; North Dakota jumped from 35% to 62%; Michigan from 34% to 50% and Ohio producers are at 71%.  The states where planting still lags behind are Wisconsin (56%); Michigan (50%); and Pennsylvania at 35%.

Corn emerged

According to the latest crop progress report, 50% of the corn planted so far this spring has emerged. That’s above the four year average of 47%. Last year, 51% of the crop had emerged at this point.

Illinois and Missouri farmers are reporting 84% of the corn they planted has emerged.

Other states in the Midwest are reporting varying levels of emergence. Indiana producers report 61%; Iowa and Nebraska say 53% has emerged.

Meanwhile, Ohio is at 45%; Minnesota 24%; Wisconsin 21%; and Michigan at 22%.

Soybeans

Producers have more soybeans planted at this point in the season than they have in the past four years. The crop progress report shows 56% of the soybeans planted, that’s up from the four-year average of 44%. In 2017, there was 50% planted at this point.

Illinois producers say they have 81% of the soybeans planted, up from 66% last week. Indiana isn’t far behind with 73% planted (was 53% last week). Nebraska farmers say they have 68% in the ground (up from 41%); Missouri has 61% (was 42%) and Iowa is reporting 58% (was 33%).

Ohio and Minnesota soybean growers say they are at the half way point (up from 31 and 33% last week), meanwhile, Wisconsin has 33% planted and Michigan is reporting 29% (was 13% and 18% last week).

Soybeans emerged

The crop progress report shows 26% of the soybeans planted have emerged, that’s above the four year average of 15%. Last year, soybean growers had 17% emerging at this time.

Wisconsin and Minnesota soybeans are behind the average. Producers say 7% in Wisconsin and only 3% in Minnesota have emerged. Michigan producers say 11% of the soybean crop has emerged there.

Meanwhile, Illinois farmers say 57% of the crop has emerged so far. In Iowa, 38% of the soybeans have popped up; Missouri producers report 33% and Nebraska producers say 25% have emerged.
