Overall, both the corn and soybean crops appear to be ahead of schedule and the majority is in good or excellent condition, according to the Crop Progress Report.

Corn

The report shows 78% of the corn planted is in good or excellent condition. That’s down 1% from last week. Last year, 68% of the crop was in good or excellent condition at this time.

In the Midwest, Illinois and Iowa has 81% of the crop in good or excellent condition. Meanwhile Minnesota (88), Wisconsin (91) and Ohio (86) are also above the average. Indiana producers say 77% is in good or excellent condition.

Pennsylvania is falling behind with only a combination of 68% in good or excellent condition followed by Michigan (71%).

The majority of the corn crop has been planted (97%). There are four states trailing behind including Pennsylvania (75); Michigan (80); Wisconsin (89) and Ohio (90). All other Midwest states are reporting over 90%.

Currently, the corn crop is ahead of the four-year average. Producers reported 86% of the corn crop has emerged. The four year average is 69%. Last year at this point, 84% of the crop had emerged.

In the report, four states showed they are behind. Ohio is reporting 79% has emerged; Wisconsin is next (75); Michigan (61) and Pennsylvania (50).

Soybeans

The soybeans planted so far are doing well, with 75% of the crop in good or excellent condition.

Three states are off to a challenging start: South Dakota growers say 67% is in good or excellent condition, Michigan with 68% and Missouri is only 54%.

This was the first week for the soybean condition report to be released in 2018.

Overall, 87% of the soybeans are now planted. That’s up from the four-year average of 75%. In 2017, 81% of the crop had been planted.

Wisconsin still lags behind with 79% in the ground and Michigan reports 65% planted.

Soybean emergence (68%) is ahead of the four-year average (52%). In 2017, 55% of the crop had emerged.

Four states are behind the four year average in the Midwest: Michigan (45%); Nebraska and North Dakota (46%) and Wisconsin (51%).
