Although boron (B) is considered the most deficient micronutrient in the world after zinc, dynamics of B use in plants and soils have continued to perplex farmers, agronomists and researchers for decades. In short, B is a micronutrient that’s needed in relatively small quantities; in fact, the narrow range between deficiency and toxicity in most plant species means the highly concentrated nature of common B sources can easily lead to undesirable distribution across a field. Furthermore, the soil-mobile nutrient B is commonly applied in a form that’s immediately soluble and susceptible to loss at the time of application, which means ensuring season-long availability can be difficult.
Aspire® with Boron is formulated with two forms of boron, along with potassium (K), in every granule. Sodium borate releases quickly and is immediately available to the plant, while calcium borate releases more slowly over the course of the growing season. Two forms of B ensure season-long availability, giving growers the confidence to apply in the fall without losing nutrients during the winter months.
“The slow-release form of boron is protected from loss, which provides growers a flexible application window,” says Ross Bender, Ph.D., senior agronomist for The Mosaic Company. “Applying in the fall can help alleviate heavy stress growers encounter while prepping for planting season with unpredictable weather patterns.”
In a recent study, The Mosaic Company found season-long B availability is not only important for protecting against loss, but for increased uptake of K in plants. The study showed that plants absorbed potassium rapidly when boron supply was adequate throughout the season. However, when B supply was limited, the plant’s K uptake capacity was also limited.
“At The Mosaic Company, we want growers to get the most out of their fertilizer products, especially during tighter economic times,” says Bender. “Aspire offers a boron solution unlike any other on the market.”
