Drone technology that allows the U.S. military to remotely fly airplanes on the other side of the world is now available for the farm. For just over $10,000, you can own the 32-inch wingspan Swinglet CAM unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)to capture aerial photos for crop monitoring, land management, remote sensing, mapping and more. No flying experience is necessary.

The UAV flies itself on a route you predetermine using included software. It also can be flown via wireless remote control at distances up to 1.2 kilometers. The plane includes a 12 megapixel camera and weighs just over a pound. A full battery charge powers an electric motor that pushes the UAV at 18 to 30 mph for up to 30 minutes.

The $10,600 list price includes the Swinglet CAM UAV, camera, operating software, a transport case, chargers and two batteries. SenseFly, its manufacturer, is based in Switzerland. It plans to announce a U.S. distributor in the near future.
