Skimping on insect control may seem like a short-term savings, but investing in a season-long insect control program will provide a return on investment in the form of improved yield potential.

Creating an effective yet affordable plan to manage profit-eating pests increases potential crop value while providing long-lasting residual activity.

North Carolina peanut and soybean grower Phillip Watson considers price, residual control and resistance management when choosing an insecticide. Worms, bean leaf beetle and leafhopper are perennial problems in his soybean fields.

Watson has found success with Intrepid Edge® insecticide. “Three days after I sprayed, I could really see the difference,” he said.

Intrepid Edge combines two unique modes of action for fast knockdown and residual control of worm pests.

“The price of Intrepid Edge is competitive, and three weeks of control is worth a lot to me,” Watson said. “It saves me from spraying a second time.”

In peanuts, Watson relies on Intrepid Edge to control fall armyworm and leafhopper populations.

Watson scouts his peanut fields three days after spraying, then again at 10 days after treatment. “We’re still seeing the same level of control at both evaluations,” he said. “With Intrepid Edge, we go from finding worms to finding zero.”

Intrepid Edge combines the quick knockdown of spinetoram with the residual control of methoxyfenozide and is safer on beneficial insects allowing them to help keep pests from coming back or new pests from invading. With optimized pest control, soybean plants stay healthier longer and may reduce  the need for a second insecticide spray.

“What really makes it stand out for me is the three-week control period,” Watson said. “No worries about control for three weeks is a big bonus.”

Watson begins control treatments when defoliation thresholds are 30% to 40% at or before bloom and 10% to 20% from R1 to R6 growth stage.

Finding a product that delivers consistent, dependable control of soybean pests for weeks provides peace of mind and protects soybean yield potential.

When choosing an insecticide for your management program, consider what modes of action were used previously and rotate chemistries. A product that knocks down pests fast and continues working reduces stress and makes an ideal rotational partner to manage resistance and keep plants healthy.
