Tolvera™ herbicide expands crop-rotation options

Crop diversity is as wide as the sky across the northern Plains — with good reason.

Pulse and oilseed crops, ranging from peas, lentils and chickpeas to canola and sunflower, bring numerous agronomic and economic benefits to this top wheat-producing region. From the Dakotas to the Pacific Northwest (PNW), incorporating these crops helps break weed, disease and insect pressure. Plus, a diverse cropping mix often helps offset market volatility for greater profit potential.

To be sure, pulse and oilseed crops come with their own market challenges. Still, the benefits outweigh the uncertainties, says James Baguley, territory manager with Corteva Agriscience in western Montana. Tolvera herbicide from Corteva gives farmers in the northern Plains and PNW a tool that opens more acres to those benefits.

FLEXIBLE OPTIONS; BETTER DECISIONS

“Although we have a lot of choices in what we would consider our cash crops, the need for effective weed control in cereals has limited our rotation options,” Baguley explains. “Ideally, we can plant a cereal crop and then follow with lentils, chickpeas, canola, sunflower, potatoes, etc.”

Tolvera herbicide significantly broadens cropping options following spring or winter wheat, durum or barley. Featuring tolpyralate, an active ingredient new to the cereals market, Tolvera herbicide provides that important high-powered broadleaf weed and grass control growers need in their cereals crop while preserving the flexibility to rotate to the crop they determine fits best for their individual situation and current market conditions.

“Tolvera herbicide gives producers more time to make next year’s cropping decisions,” Baguley says. “That’s important, given the constant market fluctuations, especially with pulse crops. It takes some of the guesswork out of those decisions, which can bring a little more peace of mind.”

SUCCESS WITHOUT SLIPPAGE

Tolvera herbicide is a Group 6 and Group 27, 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) inhibitor. Two modes of action — tolpyralate and bromoxynil — help combat the spread of resistant weeds while providing flexibility in application and crop rotation. It offers a nine-month plant-back rotation to many important crops, including field peas, lentils, canola, chickpeas, soybeans and sunflower, in the northern Plains and Pacific Northwest regions.

Joe Yenish, Ph.D., a Corteva Agriscience field scientist, has conducted extensive field trials with Tolvera herbicide. He sees an excellent fit against the most troublesome weed and grass species across the northern Plains into the Pacific Northwest.

“Tolvera herbicide has been very consistent on kochia, Russian thistle, common lambsquarters and pigweeds,” Yenish says. “Introducing a new active ingredient that adds green and yellow foxtail — locally known as pigeongrass — and barnyardgrass control without slippage on the broadleaf weeds, is a huge benefit.”

An emulsifiable concentrate formulation, Tolvera herbicide is tank-mix-friendly and -compatible with many grass and broadleaf herbicides, including OpenSky® and Rezuvant® with Arylex® active herbicides. Growers can apply Tolvera™ herbicide to spring and winter wheat, durum and barley starting at the one-leaf stage all the way up through jointing, giving growers a wide application window for maximum control of actively growing weeds less than 4 inches tall.

“Expanded rotational flexibility with Tolvera herbicide lets producers stay nimble in their cropping decisions,” Baguley says. “They can pick the crop that best fits market opportunities and the goals they’ve set for their individual operation.”
