Slideshow: Identify mid- to late-season stem diseases in sunflowers.

Scout sunflower fields in the fall and you may find several stem diseases you may need to manage in the future, says Sam Markall, North Dakota State University Extension plant pathologist, broadleaf crops. The diseases can cut yields a little bit or a lot. It all depends the pathogen. And if the disease weakens the stalk significantly and lodging occurs, watch out: Yield reductions can be significant.
