Weed resistance management tips

Managing editor Susan Winsor spoke with Ford Baldwin about weed resistance problems and how growers can manage the resistance issues that keep moving farther north. Baldwin offered farmers 5 things they can watch and do to keep weed resistance from becoming and even bigger problem.

"It’s all about soil seed bank management," says Baldwin.

From zero tolerance and managing that weed seed bank to using new technologies and better use of residual herbicides, Baldwin shares his tips with farmers battling weed resistance. He also reminds growers to keep ditches clear of weeds, and suggests teaming up with your neighbors to keep an eye out.

Those farmers who bought into a community approach have clean fields, says Baldwin. They go out together and "hunt" for pigweed, and look in fields, turn rows, ditches, neighboring fields. And anywhere they see one, they pull it.
