You’ve decided it’s time to try cover crops on your farm, and you want straight talk about how to make simple cover crop strategies work. You’re not yet ready to hear about cocktail mixes and planting green or terminating annual ryegrass in the spring.

Then Anna Morrow has the perfect opportunity for you. Morrow is director of the Midwest Cover Crops Council, a nonprofit group made up of 12 U.S. states and Ontario in Canada with the sole purpose of collecting and providing information about cover crops to farmers. More experienced cover crop farmers who do plant green find the group useful, but so do cover crop farmers just starting out.

“One of our newest projects is cover crop recipes,” Morrow says. “We developed these in conjunction with universities and the Natural Resources Conservation Service. They’re designed for people just starting out with cover crops who want to have a positive experience the first time around.”

You can find the recipes under Getting Started at the MCCC website. There are recipes for four states so far: Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and North Dakota.

On Feb. 22, MCCC will host a webinar so people who contributed information for the Indiana recipes can explain their thinking in more detail. Speakers include Bill Johnson and Eileen Kladivko with Purdue University and Barry Fisher with NRCS.

“This is a great opportunity for someone wanting to learn more about cover crops to hear about them from people who have worked them in many settings,” Morrow says.
