In its November crop report, USDA estimated a 2013-14 U.S. cotton crop of 13.11 million bales — up 210,000 bales from the September report.

Upland production was estimated at 12.48 million bales and extra-long staple (ELS) production at 626,000 bales.

Harvested area was an estimated 7.78 million acres, implying a non-harvested area of roughly 2.56 million acres based on USDA’s revised June acreage report. The resulting abandonment rate is 24.7 percent.

The national average yield per harvested acre was estimated to be roughly 808 pounds, nine pounds lower than the five-year average.

On a regional basis, the Southeast crop is estimated at 4.62 million bales, based on harvested acres of 2.61 million and a regional average yield of 848 pounds, eight pounds less than the region’s five-year average.

In the Mid-South, expected production is 2.67 million bales. Harvested area is estimated to be 1.20 million acres and the expected yield is 1,070 pounds per harvested acre, 38 pounds more than the region’s five-year average.

The Southwest upland crop is estimated at 4.33 million bales. Expected harvested area is 3.50 million acres and the regional average yield is 595 pounds, 57 pounds less than its five-year average.

Upland production in the West is an estimated 865,000 bales with an estimated harvested area of 279,000 acres and a regional average yield of 1,488 pounds, 15 pounds more than the region’s five-year average.

The ELS crop is an estimated 626,000 bales. Harvested area is pegged at 199,000 acres with an average yield of 1,510 pounds per harvested acre.
