Thousands of South Texas farmers and ranchers will converge on the Victoria Community Center Oct. 19-20 to participate in the 32nd Annual South Texas Farm and Ranch Show, an opportunity to participate in this year's Cattlemen's College (I & II) and a Crop Management program, many of the educational programs offering continuing education credits (CEUs) for participation.

Also featured at the farm and ranch show will be more than 125 trade booths and exhibits highlighting the latest in agricultural advancements, technology and equipment, as well as dozens of speakers addressing current farm and ranch issues.

Featured luncheon speakers for this year's show include Julie Borlaug and Darrell Glaser. Borlaug, granddaughter of Nobel Peace Prize laureate and father of the Green Revolution Dr. Norman Borlaug, is scheduled to talk about the Borlaug legacy during the luncheon Oct. 20. Glaser, winner of the 2014 U.S Family Farm Environmental Excellence Award, will talk about production agriculture sustainability during the luncheon Oct. 19.

BOURLAG LEGACY

Borlaug is the associate director for external relations at the Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture, part of Texas A&M AgriLife Research. She advocates for educating and engaging the next generation to ensure continued scientific and technology advances in agriculture to feed a growing world population.

She is also an advocate for innovation and technology with an eye toward ending hunger and poverty. She takes pride in continuing the Borlaug legacy and strives to inspire next generation "hunger fighters."

“My grandfather strongly believed that science and technological breakthroughs in agriculture played the key role in improving the quantity, quality and availability of food for the world’s people during the past 50 years. But it will take the unconventional ideas and innovation of small start-ups, like FarmLink, to ensure our food security in the next 50 years,” said Julie.

Since the passing of her grandfather, she has worked to continue her grandfather's legacy through developing agricultural partnerships between public, private and philanthropic groups that can help expand Borlaug's mission to feed the world’s hungry.

Julie received her BA from Texas A&M in International Studies and Political Science in 1997 and her MBA in Nonprofit Management from the University of Dallas in 2004. Prior to joining the Borlaug Institute, she worked in the nonprofit sector and has worked for organizations such as the Salvation Army and the American Cancer Society as Development Director.

Julie joined the Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture as External Relations Manager in 2006 to work alongside her grandfather, where she successfully raised funds for an endowed chair in International Agriculture in honor of her grandfather.

SUSTAINABILITY MESSAGE

Darrell Glaser operates a diversified Cattle and Turkey brooding operation in Milam and Bell counties in Texas with the operation headquarters located near Rogers, Texas. He runs five-plus flocks a year consisting of 130,000 turkeys for each flock, approximately 14 million turkeys since the farm's inception. His family operation utilizes conservation efforts by using turkey litter as the main fertilizer source on the farm. Along with the turkeys, they run a Beefmaster cow herd consisting of approximately 230 cow/calf units. Within that cattle herd, they utilize an extensive embryo transfer and a noted AI program.

Darrell and his wife Shannon have been active in the Texas Farm Bureau for many years. He served as the Vice Chair of the Young Farmer and Rancher committee in 1994. He is also active in the National Poultry and Egg Association and the United States Farmers and Ranchers Alliance. He is currently serving as one of the four current Faces of Farming and Ranching. He and his wife travel across the United States educating people about agriculture.

He and his wife are both graduates of Texas A&M University. Darrell graduated with a BS degree in Animal Science in 1990 and received a MS degree in Nutrition also from Texas A&M University in 1992. In 2001, the Glaser’s received the Texas Outstanding Young Farmer and Rancher award from the Texas Farm Bureau. More recently in 2014, they received the National Outstanding Environmental Stewardship award from National Poultry and Egg Association.

The South Texas Farm & Ranch Show is a non-profit, volunteer managed event organized to provide South Texas agribusinesses and their representatives the opportunity to communicate industry advances to farmers and ranchers. On average, the two-day show reaches between 2,000 and 3,000 individuals.

Prior to the start of the farm & ranch show, the 13th Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament will be staged with all proceeds to benefit South Texas youth. The tournament gets underway Oct. 18 beginning at 8 a.m. at the Club at Colony Creek in Victoria.

Admission to the exhibits is free and the educational programs will be $20 per person. Lunch will be included.
