During my portion of the Northeast Region Field Day held at the St. Joseph Research Station, I discussed new insecticide products recently approved for use, insecticides anticipated for the 2013 field season and overall insect pressure in field crops across northeast Louisiana.

Recently approved insecticides include Transform, a new insecticide containing the active ingredient sulfoxaflor. Transform has received an emergency use exemption for certain parishes in Louisiana for the control of tarnished plant bug in cotton. This product represents a new mode of action and has excellent activity on tarnished plant bug. It also provides excellent control of cotton aphids, but this pest is not included on the Section 18 label.

Cotton seed treatments, foliar insecticides for thrips

Meymik 15G, an anticipated insecticide for the 2013 season, is a replacement for Temik 15G. Meymik will consist of the same formulation (15G) and active ingredient (Aldicarb) as Temik. The continued registration of Aldicarb will help ensure the protection of cotton and other registered crops from above and below ground pests.

Insect pest pressure has been below average for most of the 2012 growing season. With the warm winter, many producers were able to plant corn, soybeans and cotton early. This allowed many of our acres to escape colonization from insects and reduced the amount of insecticide applications across northeast Louisiana. With the exception of tarnished plant bugs in cotton, many insect pest complexes including stink bugs and caterpillars did not materialize in much of our acreage. However, late soybeans and corn may receive an influx of insects as the field season continues.
