Top agricultural advisors and specialists will evaluate the early progress of the San Joaquin Valley’s cotton crop and offer valuable water and pest management strategies during a June 30 field day near Mendota.

The event, scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon at the Bettencourt Farm will feature leading University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Advisor Dr. Pete Goodell, UC Cooperative Extension cotton specialist Dan Munk and field scout Luis Gallegos. They will update farmers about the cotton-growing season and cover issues such as the crop-damaging lygus pest, plant development and IPM practices. Directions are available in the events section of the Sustainable Cotton Project’s website — www.sustainablecotton.org.

Two hours of continuing education credits have been applied for.

The field day is sponsored by the San Joaquin Sustainable Farming Project, a program under the direction the SCP, a Winters-based nonprofit that has worked with valley growers to bring eco-friendly Cleaner Cotton to the multi-billion green consumer market.
