Southeast cotton growers will have access to new Bollgard® 3 XtendFlex® varieties that have demonstrated outstanding yield potential and fiber quality performance comparable to DP 1646 B2XF with the launch of the Deltapine® Class of ‘20.

The new varieties combine the proven protection from bollworms provided by Bollgard® 3 Technology and the flexible, efficient weed management of the Roundup Ready® Xtend Crop System. In addition, three of these new varieties are resistant to bacterial blight.

The Class of ’20 features four broadly adapted varieties for the Southeast:

  • DP 2012 B3XF, an early-maturity variety with bacterial blight resistance

  • DP 2020 B3XF, an early-mid-maturity variety with bacterial blight resistance plus moderate tolerance to Verticillium wilt

  • DP 2038 B3XF, a mid-maturity variety with excellent yield potential and bacterial blight resistance

  • DP 2055 B3XF, a full-maturity variety with excellent fiber quality potential

The Class of ‘20 varieties were evaluated by New Product Evaluator (NPE) growers. The results of the growers’ large-acre variety plots and their feedback on management and performance were instrumental in determining the Class of ‘20.

NPE growers James and Nick Marshall planted the four Class of ‘20 candidates in 20-acre plots in Baker, Florida, with DP 1646 B2XF as the check and DP 1840 B3XF planted across the road. All four Class of ‘20 varieties out-yielded the two commercial lines in the Marshalls’ plots.

“DP 2038 B3XF yielded right at 1,700 pounds per acre and looked awesome for us all season,” said Nick. “DP 2055 B3XF pushed 1,600 pounds per acre. The fiber grades were excellent. We couldn’t tell DP 1646 B2XF and DP 2055 B3XF apart in the field.”

Having the protection of Bollgard® 3 Technology in the new Class of ‘20 varieties is a plus, according to Nick. It provides an extra layer of control for bollworms and loopers, which pose issues in his fields. The father-son farming team also liked what they saw in DP 2020 B3XF, an early-maturing variety in the new class.

“DP 2020 B3XF is little early in maturity for us, but if we get into a late-planting situation, it could be an excellent variety from what we could tell in our plot,” said Marshall. “It pushed 1,700 pounds per acre on a 20-acre plot.”

In Suffolk, Virginia, NPE grower Rich Williams said both DP 2012 B3XF and DP 2038 B3XF looked very good compared to DP 1646 B2XF in his 2019 NPE plot.

“The Deltapine variety development team must have a had a difficult time selecting which candidates to bring forward because they all looked so good in our plots. They had to pick the cream of the crop between the six candidates I evaluated, and they did just that with this class,” Williams said.

NPE grower Jason Pate in Andalusia, Alabama, believes the Class of ’20 offers varieties that can compete with, and even replace, DP 1646 B2XF on his farm.

“Both DP 2038 B3XF and DP 2055 B3XF were some of the best cotton varieties we’ve ever picked on our farm, even out-yielding every acre of DP 1646 B2XF we had on our operation in 2019,” Pate said. “The Class of ‘20 varieties I planted had the best seedling vigor of any Deltapine variety we plant today.”
