HAC Chairman: Changes needed to help those living in poverty

TAGS: Legislative

The House Agriculture Committee has held more than 80 hearings at the subcommittee- and full-committee levels over the past year on topics ranging from the farm economy to national security.

One issue that has drawn criticism from some members of Congress has been the Ag Committee's “soup-to-nuts” review of the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance) Program, which opponents want to dismantle or significantly reduce.

House Ag Committee Chairman Mike Conaway says he believes programs like SNAP are trapping benefit recipients in poverty and a better way must be found to help those families move out of poverty and dependence on federal programs.

His comments came during a speech at the Saturday (July 23) general session of the Southern Peanut Growers Conference in Destin, Fla.
