Transgenic cotton varieties now occupy better than 90 percent of the seed market in the Eastern Cotton Belt. But some cotton growers have indicated they would like to see conventional alternatives with high yields and good fiber quality. Call it serendipity or just good research, but University of Arkansas cotton breeder Fred Bourland is bulking up seed production for a new variety, UA 48, that could meet those parameters. Bourland discussed the new line following his presentation at Cotton Incorporated’s Crop Management Seminar in Memphis Nov. 10.
