Arizona’s upland cotton harvested acreage is estimated at 139,000 acres, up 6,000 acres or 5 percent from a year ago, according to the Arizona Field Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Cotton yield is forecast at 1,450 pounds per acre, 12 pounds lower than the 2008 yield. Production is forecast at 420,000 bales, 15,000 more bales than last year. The cotton crop is in mostly good to excellent condition.

American-Pima cotton harvested acreage at 1,300 acres is 500 acres more than a year ago. Production is expected at 2,700 bales, an increase of 1,900 bales from 2008. The Pima yield is estimated at 997 pounds per acre.

U.S. all cotton production is forecast at 13.2 million 480-pound bales, up 3 percent from last year’s 12.8 million bales. Yield is expected to average 816 pounds per harvested acre, up 3 pounds from last year.

U.S. upland cotton production is forecast at 12.8 million 480-pound bales, 4 percent above 2008. American-Pima production is forecast at 367,000 bales, down 15 percent from last year.

U.S. producers expect to harvest 7.77 million acres of all cotton and 7.62 million acres of upland cotton, both up 3 percent from last year. American-Pima harvested area is expected to total 146,200 acres, down 13 percent from 2008.
