Arizona Agri-Weekly: cotton crop in the ground

Cotton planting is virtually complete in Arizona with squaring on about 20 percent of the acreage; Alfalfa condition remains mostly good to excellent - harvesting active in most areas; All weather stations across Arizona, except Kingman, have below normal precipitation to date. 

The latest Arizona Agri-Weekly report from the National Agricultural Statistics Service’s Phoenix, Ariz. Field Office, released May 6.

Field crops

Cotton planting is virtually complete in Arizona. Squaring has occurred on 20 percent of the acreage, ahead of the five-year average of 14 percent.

Alfalfa condition remains mostly good to excellent. Harvesting is active in nearly all areas.

Vegetable, fruit, and specialty crops

This week, Arizona growers harvested onions, potatoes, cantaloupes, honeydews, and other melons.

Weather summary

Temperatures were mostly below normal for the week ending June 5, ranging from 11 degrees below normal at Parker to 3 degrees above normal at Douglas and Willcox.

The highest temperature of the week was 104 degrees at Coolidge, Marana, and Maricopa. The lowest reading was 21 degrees at Grand Canyon.

Precipitation was recorded at two of the 22 weather stations. Douglas received .01 inches and Tucson received .02 inches.

All weather stations across Arizona, except Kingman, have below normal precipitation to date.
