The latest Arizona Agri-Weekly Report from the National Agricultural Statistics Service’s Field Office in Phoenix, Ariz., released Aug. 22.

Field crops

Ninety-five percent of Arizona’s cotton acreage has set bolls, slightly behind the five-year average but just ahead of last year. Boll opening is at 40 percent mostly along the Colorado River. The condition of the cotton crop varies from mostly fair to excellent.

Alfalfa condition is mostly good to excellent. Harvesting is active on over three-fourths of the acreage across the state.

Vegetable, fruit, and specialty crops

Arizona growers harvested miscellaneous melons.

Weather summary

Temperatures were mostly above normal for the week ending Aug. 21, ranging from normal at Parker to 11 degrees above normal at Grand Canyon.

The highest temperature of the week was 113 degrees at Buckeye and Yuma. The lowest reading was 45 degrees at Grand Canyon.

Precipitation was recorded in 11 of the 22 weather stations. The least precipitation was recorded in Grand Canyon with 0.07 inches. The most precipitation was recorded in Payson with 2.29inches. Willcox is the only area with above normal precipitation to date.
